April 2024
Finally we are seeing what is to come – on those days without rain and wind we are getting some lovely spring weather – much more conducive to casting a line. More importantly the still waters are newly stocked and there seems to be plenty of trout willing to play.
On the river there is plenty of water at the moment and the run off seems to be clearing although the water quality is down with the nitrates and other nutrients that come with the run off. This includes some untreated water from several small treatment works up stream. If this weather is going to be the norm clearly there will have to be some changes on the way things are managed if we are to preserve our trout rivers.
One of the joys of having access to one of the increasing number of well managed chalk streams, is the increasing number of Grayling giving us sport all through the year. Using a Perdigon* nymph, these weighted nymphs get down quickly and can prove vey effective with both Grayling and trout. Check out our new Perdigon thread from Sybai for creating these little flies.
* The name Perdigon relates to their heavy weight like a ‘pellet’ or piece of shot.

Hooks!
The hook is the heart of the fly – so we need to make sure we use the very best we can. Scottie Products have been supplying Grip hooks for several years now and we believe they offer super value hooks in a wide range of patterns. Scottie are now offering Grip hooks in 100s in the most popular patterns – same hooks but a better price!
We are also offering a range of hooks at special clearance prices, having over the years sourced hooks for professional tyers we have several patterns available at knock down prices. But when they are gone they are gone.

Although we are all avid fly tyers sometimes when we have planned an exotic trip packing a few bought flies isn’t a bad idea.
If you are planning a special trip this year you could do worse than checking out our range flies by Scientific Fly – tied on Grip hooks.
